Mountain Biking Benefits

One of the key elements of sticking to an exercise routine is finding a type of exercise you enjoy. If you choose something that’s too hard, you won’t enjoy it. You won’t be able to stick with it if you hate it.

Mountain biking on the other hand is easy to get started with and as you develop strength and agility you’ll be able to make it as challenging (or relaxing) as you wish.

Furthermore, mountain biking has several health benefits that make it appealing to young and old alike.

Mountain biking Improves heart health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women and most ethnic groups in the united states. Mountain biking improves cardiovascular health, that is, it strengthens the heart and the lungs making them healthier and more efficient. Over time, the heart grows strong which decreases the risk of death by heart disease.

It is a low impact sport. Many sports such as jogging and running create repeated impacts on the joints. This reduces the risk of joint injury.

Helps strengthen your immune system. Regular moderate exercise is know to bolster the immune system meaning you will get sick less often. Regular exercise helps to ward off Alzheimer’s disease.

Mountain biking boosts your mood and improves focus. Vigorous exercise increases circulation and improves blood flow to the entire body including the brain. It also releases serotonin and endorphines which reduce anxiety and depression. Many people experience a boost in creativity and problem solving ability during exercise.

It improves balance and coordination. Mountain biking requires the rider to navigate changing terrain and to maintain balance. Maintaining balance and coordination require the combined effort of brain, senses, muscles, and nervous system. Maintaining these skills helps to prevent disabilty and falling as we age.

Cycling works the whole body. You may think that only the legs get a workout, but in reality mountain biking strengthens the calves, thighs, and even the glutes. The actions required to stay upright and maneuver over changing terrain make you use your core muscles. Climbing and taking tricky turns strengthens the upper body.

Vigorous exercise improves the quality of your sleep. It’s not just because you tucker yourself out that you get a better nights sleep, exercise reduces cortisol which keeps us awake. Mountain biking is typically a daytime sport which exposes you to sunlight which helps regulate your circadian rythm and provides vitamin D both of which are needed for effective sleep.

So get outside and get moving. Have fun and start living a healthier lifestyle.
