If you’re new to Dirt Bike riding, you may be itching to get out on the trails and just ride. I know the feeling.
But before you do that, there are a few bits of gear that are not strictly necessary, but will make your rides more enjoyable.
Rear Rack for hauling more gear.
If you’re looking for a rear rack, you’ll want to look for one that is durable and can handle the weight you intend to haul. Look for one that is easy to install and doesn’t need modifications to the rack, or worse your bike. Having multiple tie down spots is a plus.
GPS system for finding your way and keeping track of fellow riders. GPS systems have the obvious benefit of helping you stay on trail, but they can also be used to keep track of fellow riders. You’ll want to look for a GPS designed for Dirt Bike riding. You’ll need a bright display that is easy to read in full sunlight. Look for something with a rugged case and mounting system. Choose a GPS that is easy to operate while wearing gloves. Taking your gloves off to operate a GPS is just plain annoying. Some nice to have features include being able to power the GPS from your bike, and an emergency alert system to get help should you need it. While the major manufacturers offer motorcycle GPS units, these are typically designed for street bikes and lack the durability needed for off road use.
Hour Meter to help you determine what maintenance is needed. Unlike your car, your dirt bike measures the maintenance intervals in hours rather than miles. An hour meter makes it easy to figure out how long until the next oil change or brake pad replacement. This is an inexpensive item that will eliminate the hassle of having to track your time every time you ride.
These are some of the more useful accessories for your dirt bike. Riding is much more enjoyable when you can just ride, not worrying about getting lost or trying to keep track of hours of operation.
